Maintenance of HDPE countertops

HDPE is a durable, non-porous material known for its smooth surface and resistance to moisture, stains, and bacteria. Lightweight and versatile, it’s perfect for a modern, functional kitchen. With simple care, your HDPE countertop will remain fresh, resilient, and easy to maintain.

Daily cleaning

For everyday cleaning, all you need is a soft cloth or sponge with warm water and a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Wipe down the surface gently and dry with a clean cloth to remove any excess moisture. This simple routine will keep your HDPE countertop looking crisp and hygienic.

For sticky spots or minor stains, use a non-abrasive pad or a melamine sponge. Avoid using harsh chemicals, scouring pads, or abrasive cleaning powders, as they can damage the surface.

Quarterly care

HDPE surfaces are designed to withstand daily use without heavy maintenance, but a periodic refresh is always beneficial. Every few months, follow this process for a deeper clean:

  • Apply a mild pH-neutral cleaner or gentle degreaser to the surface.
  • Let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe with a soft cloth or sponge.
  • For more stubborn stains, you can use a melamine sponge in gentle circular motions.
  • Rinse with warm water and wipe dry with a clean towel.

This will ensure any accumulated oils or residue are removed, keeping the surface looking fresh and smooth.

Preventive care

While HDPE is highly resistant, a few precautions will help maintain its integrity:

  • Unless you enjoy using the countertop as a cutting board - which can be done, and will be followed by a beautiful patina -, always use a cutting board to prevent scratches. HDPE is more resilient than many surfaces, but sharp knives can still leave marks over time.
  • Use trivets or heat pads under hot pots and pans, as excessive heat can cause deformation or discolouration.
  • Wipe up spills promptly, especially from acidic or strongly pigmented substances like coffee, wine, or citrus juice.
  • Avoid dragging heavy objects across the surface, as this can cause scuffing or scratching.
