Maintenance of fronts in waxed oak veneer

Taking good care of your waxed veneer fronts and panels will maintain their resilience, and resistance to wear and impact, and keep the veneer looking neat and clean. A waxed veneer is being used for the following collections: BASIS, SURFACE and STRAP.

Below, we’ve listed some good advice on how to best maintain your fronts.

Daily Cleaning

For daily maintenance, wipe with a damp, soft, lint-free cloth. Wipe the surface in a vertical motion, following the direction of the grain to prevent fibers from getting stuck. Refrain from using detergents and soap, as they may dry out the wood. Abrasive detergents and sponges should be avoided.

Occasional Deep Cleaning & Waxing

For stubborn stains, the Wood Cleaner by Guardian is recommended. It is based on natural soaps and is specially developed for effective cleaning and degreasing of all unvarnished indoor wood surfaces. Mix the cleaner with clean, lukewarm water in a 1:1 ratio. For very dirty surfaces, it may be used in concentrated form.

How to apply wood cleaner:

Apply the product to the wood with a soft, lint-free cloth or a soft sponge in a thin, even layer, following the grain direction with light pressure so that the cleaner foams. It is recommended that the entire surface be treated.

Let the product/foam sit for a maximum of 5 minutes, then wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth wrung out in clean water.

When the wood is completely dry and you notice that it has risen or become rough, sand it lightly in the direction of the grain with fine sandpaper (220 grit).

After using the Guardian Wood Cleaner, the wood should be treated with Guardian Beeswax. The wax will nurture and protect the wood from stains and liquids, replenishing its natural glow.

How to apply wax:

For wooden furniture, it is a good idea to use the Guardian Wood Cleaner before treating it with Guardian Beeswax.

Start waxing the surface by wiping it with a soft, lint-free cloth wrung out in clean water. Then, apply the wax with a soft, lint-free cloth or a soft sponge in an even, thin layer. Always treat wooden furniture in the grain direction.

For BASIS natural oak, we recommend Beeswax; for BASIS smoked oak, Dark Wax is recommended. Treatment is best done on all sides and edges.

Allow the wax to dry for approximately 30 minutes, then polish the surface with a dry, lint-free cloth. If treating solid worktops, apply the treatment to both the top and underside.

It is recommended to use Guardian Beeswax 3-4 times a year. Always test the product on a non-visible spot before use.

Preventive Measures

For stubborn stains, we recommend Guardian Wood Cleaner. If the wood grain rises or becomes rough, sand it lightly with fine sandpaper. Refrain from using steel wool at all times. Treatment, cleaning, or sanding should always be done in the grain direction.

Avoid exposure to heat and humidity, as this can cause stains. For dishwashers, we advise deactivating the automatic opening function once a program is finished and opening the dishwasher fully manually. This prevents a concentrated steam release through a narrow opening angle that might cause mold stains over time.

Refrain from using acidic and alkaline products, products that are heavily chlorinated, or contain bleach, as they may stain or degrade the surface.

Do not cover the furniture with air-tight materials for extended periods of time.
